Local Veterans Say Republicans Were Wrong To Elevate Representative McKeon on Armed Services Committee
Recently chosen by his GOP colleagues as the ranking Republican on the House Armed Services Committee, Representative
Howard “Buck” McKeon talks a pretty good game about supporting the troops.
Problem is, McKeon is all talk. His actions consistently disrespect the men and women who wear the uniform of the U.S. Military,
according to four veterans who live in McKeon’s Southern California Congressional District.
The Republicans’ decision to have Buck McKeon lead them on the Armed Services Committee is an affront to many men and
women who have served their country, say Marine Corps veterans Ken Rhude of Castaic and Alvin Brown of Victorville and Navy
veterans Perry Watkins, Sr. and Maggie Campbell, both from Lancaster.
“Certainly, the mountains of Afghanistan will be very cold in the upcoming winter for our troops, “ Rhude said. “But here on the
home front, Representative McKeon treats our troops and veterans coldly with his votes.”
By voting against the Economic Recovery Act of 2009 and the Congressional Budget for the 2010 fiscal year, McKeon:
Opposed $1.2 billion to rebuild and renovate aging military hospitals and veterans’ medical facilities.
Denied $100 million for warrior transition complexes that provide critical services for wounded warriors and their families after a
return from combat.
Refused a $5.6 billion increase for veterans’ health care and other services.
Rejected $100 million for construction of operations and training facilities to support National Guard units around the country.
“McKeon may call himself a ‘friend’ to the military, but he’s a friend in rhetoric only,” said Brown. “In reality, McKeon has
consistently voted against the pressing needs of our troops and veterans.”
“Our troops need a member of Congress who is on their side,” Campbell said.
Added Watkins, “Sadly, Buck McKeon is not that person.”

Opinion/Editorial Piece
“Are We Putting Families First?”
Shortly following the November, 2008 election, Maggie Campbell announced her intention to run again for the California
State Assembly 36th District. Her website announces the grand opening of her Antelope Valley Headquarters on
September 26, 2009. Her campaign theme, “Putting Families First” speaks directly to what is missing in our current
representative, Steve Knight. But what does “Putting Families First” actually mean? A visit to her campaign website
offers a simple illustration:
1. Advancing legislation to promote health, education, safety for children;
2. Strengthen our region in the areas of green and higher paying jobs;
3. Working to keep a balanced budget at the State Capitol;
4. Advancing legislation that will promote and implement renewable energy;
5. Keeping dangerous criminals behind bars;
6. Improving veterans and senior citizens services;
7. Restoring home ownership pride in our communities and develop foreclosure solutions.
If that’s not putting families first, then what is. A further perusal of her website includes Community Events,
Volunteers, Veterans Affairs, Safety for Children, and on and on. In contrast to what we’ve seen from our current
assemblyman Steve Knight, Mrs. Campbell seems truly in touch with what our community needs and has sought,
unsuccessfully, in choosing its representatives.

VETERAN’S SUPPORTING VETERAN’S COMMITTEE OF THE Maggie Campbell Campaign for State
Assembly AD36 Announces a Rally and March upon the Palmdale Veteran’s Center
United States Navy Veteran, Maggie Campbell, and Air Force Special Ops – Veteran, Brooks Sampson will join
with fellow military veterans throughout the Antelope Valley to protest the unnecessary delays in opening the
Palmdale Veteran’s Center.
The Veteran community in the Antelope Valley is tired of driving to Sepulveda and West LA for counseling. The
question becomes, why take this long trip to the West side of Los Angeles when the Veteran’s Center hired a
Vietnam Veteran who is a therapist to help veterans here in the Antelope Valley.
“I went to the center today and the Office manager didn't even offer services or let us in the door, we kind of just
walked in but she wouldn't let us take a tour or anything. States Brooks Sampson, Air Force Veteran who did 3
tours in Afghanistan as an aircraft mechanic. “She didn't even know who I could call to get answers on why the
center isn't open yet. I asked for her boss's number and she gave me a number in Sacramento and it was
disconnected. So you can see I am very frustrated.”
The Veteran’s Supporting Veteran’s Committee of the Maggie Campbell Campaign for State Assembly
immediately moved into action to support fellow veteran, Brooks Sampson by contacting over 500 veterans to
help with rallying this very important cause including but not limited to Senator Barbara Boxer’s office for
assistance as well.
Veteran’s Supporting Veterans is a committee organized by Maggie Campbell, Navy Veteran for the expressed
reasons of supporting causes and issues that are important to fellow veterans military servicemen and women
and our families.
“I have been an Advocate for Veteran’s rights for many years. When the Veteran’s Support Veterans
Committee learns of issues that affects veterans, we are quick to respond and help, whether it is political or
nonpolitical issues. We are a family. We want veteran supporters to attend and join us as we have our say!”

INTRODUCING: THE NATIONAL WOMEN’S POLITICAL CAUCUS OF ANTELOPE VALLEY The Antelope Valley welcomes the National Women’s Political Caucus of Antelope Valley, (NWPC-AV) under the leadership of Mrs. Maggie Campbell, candidate for the California State Assembly in AD 36 and a Delegate to the California Democratic Party – is the Founder and President. The mission of the National Women’s Political Caucus of Antelope Valley is to increase women’s participation in the political process and to identify, recruit, train and support feminist women for election and appointment to public office. While in pursuit of this goal, NWPC-AV will strive to win equality for all women; to ensure reproductive freedom; to achieve quality dependent care; and to eradicate sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, ageism, ableism, violence, poverty, and discrimination on the basis of religion or sexual orientation. In the aftermath of the Clarence Thomas - Anita Hill hearings in 1991, there was a surge of newly elected women in public office. In 1994, Congress passed into law 30 bills on women’s issues with 33 more the following year. The previous record for any year had been five. NWPC-AV is a multi-partisan organization working with pro-choice, pro-ERA women in political parties; we can influence party platforms from within. We will endorse pro-choice women candidates for local boards and commissions, school boards, city councils and mayors of smaller cities, as well as County Boards of Supervisors and State Legislative Offices. The NWPC-AV will officially install its Board of Directors and accept new members on January 23, 2010. Join with us today, complete your application online at http://nwpc-av.webs.com or at the 1st Annual Inspiring Values Democrats Club Convention, Saturday January 23, 2010. ###########################
